Lara Croft is young, brilliant, and unproven — fresh out of university and desperate to prove herself to the archaeological world. Against the advice of her mentor Conrad Roth, she convinces the crew of the Endurance to chase a theory: the lost kingdom of Yamatai, hidden somewhere off Japan's Dragon's Triangle.

A violent and inexplicable storm tears the Endurance apart. Lara washes ashore, injured, alone, and terrified. The island is beautiful and deadly — its forests dense with the bones of those who came before.

She is captured almost immediately. Hung upside down in a cave full of corpses, Lara must make her first kill — a moment the game frames as traumatic, transformative, and irreversible.

The island is controlled by a cult called the Solarii Brotherhood, led by the charismatic and ruthless Dr. Mathias. He arrived years ago searching for Yamatai's secrets, and when no ship could leave — stopped by the storms that never end — he built a kingdom of survivors turned slavers.

Mathias believes that sacrificing the right person — a woman who matches the bloodline of Himiko, the Sun Queen — will end the storms and let him leave. His eye falls on Lara's friend, Sam Nishimura, who may carry the ancient lineage.

Ancient records tell of Queen Himiko, who ruled Yamatai centuries ago and wielded supernatural power over storms and weather. She was worshipped, feared, and ultimately entombed alive when her followers believed her soul had grown corrupt. But Himiko never truly died — she learned to transfer her soul into new hosts.

What follows is a brutal gauntlet. Lara crosses burning forests, flooded tombs, radio towers in lightning storms. She loses allies. She kills to protect what remains of her crew. With every obstacle cleared, she becomes someone new — someone harder, sharper, more capable.

Her mentor Roth dies protecting her. His sacrifice echoes through every action she takes afterward.

Mathias performs the ritual. Himiko's soul transfers into Sam. Lara arrives too late to stop it — but not too late to end it. She destroys the source of Himiko's power. The storms break. The island dies.
